UPDATE: Kiev fines Russia’s Gazprom $3.4 bln for transit monopoly abuse

KIEV, Jan 22 (PRIME) -- The Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine has charged Russian gas giant Gazprom a U.S. $3.4 billion fine for abuse of its monopoly position on the gas transit market, Head of the authority Yury Terentyev said on his Facebook account on Friday.

“We have just made a decision concerning the abuse of the monopoly position on the market of natural gas transit via main pipelines across the territory of Ukraine by company Gazprom as a monopoly buyer. The sum of the penalty is 85 billion hryvnas,” Terentyev said.

First Deputy Director of the committee Maria Nizhnik said that Ukraine can go to court, asking to force Gazprom to pay the fine if the company does not pay voluntarily within two months.
